Welcome Barry and may you have a long and happy association with this Club!
On Wednesday 13th January over 200 students from eight schools in District 1280 including 33 from St. Catherine‘s Academy Bolton were taken to the main chemistry lecture theatre of Manchester University to watch a demonstration by Professor David Collinson.
During the hour long demonstration using air, earth, fire and water as his theme Professor Collinson produced plenty of ear shattering bangs and pyrotechnics, sending plastic water bottles flying across the theatre, making beautiful effects with photoluminescence and creating white hot molten iron from the Thermite process. All of which was avidly watched and heard by the students (and teachers and Rotarians accompanying them) who probably, unlike the Professor, would not be able to turn off all the fire alarms before carrying out the demonstrations!
The “The Excitement of Science” lecture was sponsored by Rotary District 1280, who also organised and paid for the transport to and from the university.
Thanks to David Howarth for organising our club‘s effort with St. Catherine‘s Academy and for taking the photographs.
